There’s a referendum happening at UBC.
Voting NO is crucial to ensure inclusivity at the AMS.

The AMS is the elected body of the students. The AMS should represent ALL students, regardless of religion, race, ethnicity, sexuality, gender identity and expression, socio-economic background, political beliefs or other areas of difference.

If passed, this referendum will:

  • Would endorse a radical, extremist political position.
  • The AMS is a political body, and its role is to take positions on challenging issues. But with the interests of 60,000 students to be represented, and a vast range of pressing needs, the AMS is engaging in a divisive, obstructive intrusion into foreign affairs. There is a broad diversity of opinions on the issues around Israel and Palestine, and a divisive, one-sided approach does not advance coexistence or mutual understanding. It does not promote peace.
  • Above all, the referendum diverts crucial attention and resources away from the issues that matter most to UBC students – and discredits the AMS, the reputation of the university – and YOUR right to excellence in education on a welcoming, inclusive campus.
  • Voter turnout in AMS elections has historically been extremely low. Referendums traditionally require very few votes to pass .This means a tiny, unrepresentative, extremist minority could disproportionately affect the reputation of YOUR campus and YOUR degree. A small number of radical activists could force a student strike that undermines your right to the education you have paid for and worked for.
